To support their hulking mass, elephants eat pretty much any kind of vegetation they can get their trunk on: grass, leaves, bark, roots, and—according to this video—wood charcoal.
Elephant scientists in India’s Nagarhole National Park stumbled on an elephant who appeared to be picking up pieces of charcoal, putting them in its mouth, and blowing out the accompanying ash.
They think that the “smoke-breathing” elephant may have been taking advantage of charcoal’s ability to bind to toxins, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
