“Sophia the Robot” Has Become The World’s First “Humanoid Citizen”‘ And It’s Creepy As Hell

The world has gained its first ‘robot citizen’, thanks to the Hong Kong company who designed it, Hanson Robotics.

Her name is Sophia the Robot and she has been granted Saudi citizenship because of her ‘human-like characteristics’, which has raised quite a few eyebrows.

Sophia was debuted at the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh yesterday, where she was ‘interviewed’ by moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin – even taking a pop at Elon Musk (who has warned of the dangers of AI in the past) in the process.

Her AI allows her facial expression and body movements to change depending on what she’s saying, and she ALREADY HAS AN AWARENESS THAT SHE IS ‘CREEPY’ TO SOME PEOPLE. *breathes into paper bag*

Watch the full interview below, and read their exchange below that. It’s the “Don’t worry, if you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you,” bit that sounds particularly ominous to us.
